Notes on Michael Hourigan

He may of had a brother named James, died Jan 1 1883, age73yrs, 5 mo., who came from County Clare, Ireland in the 1830's The RR showed a Mrs James (Ellen O'Reilly) of S. Elmsly 1817-1896, dead, leaving 9 children.

He may have had a brother John Abt (1832- 1898) See the Rideau Record notes.

The Rideau recorder showed in Michaels Obit the following;
"An old and highly esteemed Citizen was called to rest, Michael Hourigan who died at his home on Market St. about 5pm last evening. For some time he had been failing in health, but didn't suffer as he slept away. he was 87 yrs And over three score years he had been a prominent figure in the community. he was born in County Clare, Ireland, and moved here when he was 20 yrs. He settled in Poonamalie and lived there all his life until he moved to town some years ago. He was always a good reader and the most intelligent and best informed men in his neighborhood. Notes on Francis Hourgan

The Rideau Record, on April 4th, 1901, titled, "Going Northwest" showed , " Francis Hourigan and son, Micheal will leave towards the end of this month for Calgary, Northwest Territory. Mr Hourigan owns a large track of land 12 miles from Calgary and will go into the ranching business. He will take 100 head of cattle with him. the family will not go with him just now, but will follow later.
And later on page 9 it showed.
Auction of Frank Hourigans Farm. Sat. April 13th, 1901. "A large quantity of machinery and farming utensils will be sold. There will also be sold large amounts of real estate including farm properties and town properties. Everything will be sold as the proprietor will be moving to the Northwest. 12:00, by Auctioneer, DC Healy

 Notes on Mary Kenny Hourigan:

Sponsors at her baptism were Nicholas Balfe and Mary Balfe
Age 75 when died.
I found a Mary Ann Kenney in Sturgeon Bay on the 1870 census listed as a domestic servant on page 9 of the census. It showed her as age 18, which could therefore be her. This would mean that all the known siblings went to Door County, WI, with the exception of Eleanor. She married in 1876 in Smith Falls, Ontario.

Chris Surfus sent me an article from the Door Co. Advocate, dated Dec. 22, 1910. It states ,
"Mrs. Mary Hourigan of Smith Falls, Ont. is revisiting this town after being absent of 39 years. She is a sister of Edward and James Kenny and Mrs. Phil Gillick, and will be remembered by the older residence. Frank J. Hourigan and his wife of Carthage, NY, are also spending a week here, the first being a son of Mrs. Hourigan. He is an engineer on a NY railroad and expects to remain for a week."
This tells me that the above Mary Ann Kenney on the 1870 census is this Mary Kenny Hourigan.

In another article from the same paper, Dec. 29th, 1910, there was an article Chris sent, " Richard Kenny of Omaha, Neb., is spending the holidays with his relatives and friends and a family reunion was held with in the week, at which all the surviving members of the family were present."
