Agent’s remarks on Carnew, 1827

‘Pauperism to any considerable extent appears to proceed from want of religious education. Such education imparts a disposition to industry and frugality. It would qualify the individuals for stations of trust and profit. When his own native country could not afford him such employment and could produce a comparable means of subsistence it is probable that he will emigrate to a market where there is a greater demand for the service he is capable of performing. It is not likely that he will become a useless burden to the community.’
